Cover story: System 10 sees foil sales growth
On our front cover this month is an eye-catching project using System 10 coloured profile. The project (highlighted in our April PVC-U feature) is a ground-breaking private housing development in Gateshead called Staiths South Bank, which saw the teaming up of developers, George Wimpey City with the high profile designers, Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, co-founders of the Red or Dead fashion label.

According to System 10's manufacturer, WHS Halo, we are seeing a marked growth in the use of both coloured foils and traditional window industry woodgrain foils. Mike Stevenson, Sales and Marketing Director for the Public Sector says: 'The drivers behind this trend are twofold. In the case of coloured foils, it is quite simply the case that more and more architects and specifiers are waking up to the fact that colours can be achieved in PVC-U. Hitherto, it has generally been perceived that PVC-U equals white.

In total, 300 square metres of 60 minute integrity and insulation fire-resistant glazing were successfully installed to protect the escape route around the stairs and lift.

0-600 in just nine months
Nine months is not a long time in business. However, that is exactly how long it took Mark Rowland to set up Lancashire PVC-U Trade Frames and develop the business to the point where it regularly fabricates 600 frames a week. This is a remarkable achievement, even for someone with extensive industry experience like Mark. And the 20 years Mark spent working for, running and setting up successful window fabrication businesses will ensure this is not a flash in the pan. Of course, continued support from HW Plastics, whose HW70 system the company fabricates, also helps.

Mark is already looking to the future and at ways of maintaining the momentum. ‘In the second half of this year we will take on Elite 70, HW Plastics’ ‘state of the art’ window system. We have already indentified extra business the benefits of that system will generate. Our premises were selected with rapid growth in mind so we know we have the space to expand our production. 1000 frames a week is a target we are sure to reach in the foreseeable future.’

Mackie takes a knock
Window and door industry sales representatives are well-known for their toughness, resilience and staying power. Hallmark Panels salesman and part-time rugby referee Malcolm McEwan – ‘Mackie’ to his colleagues – proved the point when he was knocked flat by Ricky Kiori, Langholm’s Kiwi flanker during a national league match... and still got up a few minutes later to finish the game.

Mackie, who looks after Scotland for Hallmark and used to play the utility back position for Hawick Harlequins RFC, has been refereeing for 13 years, overseeing many BT National Scottish League matches. The indomitable McEwan managed to find enough breath to blow for a stoppage before he hit the ground, getting up again a few minutes later to finish the game, and was back at work on Monday as usual. He says:

Stopray proves the Point
‘The Point’ is a new 11 storey building in London’s current construction hot-spot – Paddington Basin. Designed by Terry Farrell & Partners, the distinctive curved-on-plan facade utilised the expertise of Swiss curtain wall company –Felix UK Limited.

But the building is not merely striking. The specification of Glaverbel’s Stopray glazing ensures maximum comfort and minimum air con and heating expertise for its occupants. Stopray is a family of glass with a fine layer of precious metal on one side to give it ‘sun screen’ and ‘thermal mirror’ properties. There are over 35 different colours and tints in the Stopray palette – giving real choice and scope for experimentation. ‘Neutrals’, which have outstanding light transmission properties, are becoming popular in the UK.

Super Spacer, Edgetech's 'get out of jail card'
Higher performance, hard coat low E glass appeared to be the answer to Document L, so virtually any window would achieve the required 2.0 U value in England and Wales, and 1.8 in Scotland. But the results of a comprehensive test programme presented by the GGF at Glassex 2004 may cast doubt on this, says Edgetech.

Various configurations of PVC-U windows with hard coat low-E and aluminium spacer bars struggled to get below the required 2.0 U value. Warm edge spacer bars, and Edgetech's Super Spacer in particular, boosted performance by an extra 0.2 U value enabling all the windows tested to pass the standard with ease.

Hegla launches three-way solution for long loads
Hegla has launched its range of products for storing long materials to the UK. These products have already proved to be very popular in mainland Europe with many systems already installed.

The main problem faced by all users and stockists of long materials is the necessity for loading gaps and often specialised loading equipment. Hegla has addressed these problems in three ways. Firstly by utilising a mobile racking system the products can be stored compactly with the need for only one loading gap. This gap can be opened anywhere in the storage system allowing the use of a side loading forklift access to the stored items. Secondly by using a ‘drawer’ system the relevant storage unit can be pulled clear of the main storage area allowing easy access with a standard forklift.

The abilities of the attachment coupled with the reliability and versatility of the Combilift has enabled us to speed up loading and guarnatee flawless products for our end customers.’

New regs, new methods
Against the background of huge impending changes in how people work at height, the International Powered Access Federation is empasising the importance of operator training. The Health and Safety Council has already estimated that new regulations will see between 45,000 and 70,000 workers move away from using ladders to other forms of access. IPAF’s PAL Card is a widely recognised and highly regarded proof of platform operator training. Already 120,000 have been trained and 200 more apply for training each working day.

Gear for heightened safety
With changes in height safety legislation imminent, good training for everyone working at height, or directors and managers with staff operating above the ground, is more important than ever. Construction is a key area for the new legislation, which will therefore have a major impact on the window and glazing industries.

Capital Safety Group Northern Europe (CSGNE), with its leading brands Sala and Protecta, is at the forefront of the drive to ensure the safety of people working at height – not only through its equipment but also in the important area of safety training.

Rosy for Rosewood
Rosewood has experienced such a dramatic increase in demand and popularity over the last few months that some window companies are thinking about replacing mahogany with Rosewood as their standard foiled product, according to Profoil managing director Colin Deans. This richer, more wood like colour was introduced to the industry about four years ago and was positioned alongside Golden Oak as an alternative to the popular mahogany. However, its growth over the years has been about 25 per cent, while mahogany has declined.

'You can physically see the growth in our foil store room,' said Colin Deans. 'Rosewood now takes up double the amount of shelf space that the other colours occupy. Anyone who is not offering rosewood today is losing out on a very lucrative market place.'
